Frequently Asked Questions

Safety & structure

  • Are these chews hard enough to hurt my dog's teeth? No, the chew is deliberately formulated to be firm enough to clean but not hard enough to crack enamel, chip a crown, or damage gums. Unlike antlers, nylon bones or cooked bones, there's no risk of tooth fracture from biting down.
  • How do they clean teeth if they're not hard? Through mechanical friction, not force. The texture scrapes plaque and tartar off the tooth surface as the dog chews and gnaws, the same way a toothbrush works by contact, not pressure.
  • Is it safe for puppies / senior dogs / dogs with sensitive teeth? Because it's not hard enough to damage enamel or gums, it's suitable across life stages and for dogs with weaker jaws or dental sensitivity, always worth noting size/breed guidance per product line.

Dental & breath benefits

  • Does it actually help with bad breath? Yes, the milk-derived proteins content shifts the pH of the saliva, creating an environment less hospitable to the odour-causing bacteria that cause bad breath, rather than just masking it.
  • How is this different from a normal treat? Most treats are for taste/reward only. This is functional: mechanical cleaning (friction) plus a chemical effect (milk-derived proteins/pH shift on oral bacteria) working together.
  • How often should my dog chew one for dental benefit? For the intended dental benefit, we recommend one chew per day, following the feeding guidelines for the specific product. Always provide fresh drinking water alongside the chew.

Ingredients & formulation

  • What's the chew made from? Plutos chews are made primarily from milk-derived ingredients, combined with carefully selected ingredients depending on the specific product and flavour. For the complete formulation, please check the ingredient list on the individual product packaging or product page. We keep our recipes focused on ingredients that serve a purpose, while avoiding unnecessary fillers.

  • Is it natural / grain-free / allergy-friendly? Our formulations and claims can vary between product lines and flavours. Please check the individual product page or packaging for the exact ingredients, nutritional information and applicable claims. If your dog has a known food allergy or intolerance, always check the complete ingredient list before feeding.

Usage & safety

  • Should I supervise my dog while chewing? Yes. As with any dog chew or treat, we recommend supervising your dog while they chew, particularly during their first use. Make sure your dog chews the product appropriately and always provide a chew that is suitable for their size and chewing style.
  • What if my dog swallows a large piece? Plutos chews are intended to be chewed rather than swallowed whole. If your dog attempts to swallow large pieces, remove the remaining chew and monitor them closely. If your dog has swallowed a large piece or shows signs of choking, difficulty breathing, vomiting, discomfort or unusual behaviour, contact your veterinarian promptly.
  • Is it suitable for aggressive chewers? Plutos chews are designed to be chewable rather than rock-hard. This makes them a different type of chewing experience from extremely hard products such as antlers, nylon bones or other highly durable chews. Aggressive chewers may consume them more quickly, so they should always be supervised and given an appropriately sized product. For dogs that destroy chews very quickly, choose the most suitable Plutos product according to the recommended chewing level and size.

Main benefits of rapeseed (colza) oil

  • Low in saturated fat - around 7%, considerably lower than butter and many animal fats.
  • Rich in monounsaturated fat -  fat oleic acid, which is generally considered heart-friendly.
  • Contains omega-3 (ALA) - rapeseed oil provides a useful amount of plant-based alpha-linolenic acid.
  • Good omega-6: omega-3 balance -  better balanced than many common vegetable oils.
  • Vitamin E - provides antioxidant vitamin E.
  • Neutral flavour -  refined rapeseed oil works well for cooking without strongly changing the flavour of food.
  • Suitable for high-heat cooking -  refined rapeseed oil has a relatively high smoke point and is suitable for frying and roasting.

Benefits for dogs

  1. Omega-3 (ALA)

Rapeseed oil contains a relatively high amount of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

ALA can contribute to skin and coat health, although dogs convert ALA to the more biologically active EPA/DHA rather inefficiently.

  1. Healthy fatty-acid profile

It is relatively low in saturated fat and high in unsaturated fats.

This can help formulate products with a healthier overall fat profile.

  1. Skin & coat

The essential fatty acids can support normal skin barrier function and a healthy, shiny coat.

  1. Energy

Like other oils, it provides concentrated energy: approximately 9 kcal/g.

This can be useful in a high-protein chew when additional energy is desirable.

  1. Palatability

Fat can improve the palatability and aroma of dog treats and chews.

  1. Vitamin E

Rapeseed oil naturally contains vitamin E, which has antioxidant functions.
